Identity card: triangular in shape, with an area of 74 km², a coastal perimeter of 70 km, and a population of approximately 2000 inhabitants.
County town: Apollonia . Main port: Kamarès . Characteristics: not yet affected by mass tourism, the island of Sifnos
long renowned for its pottery and weaving workshops, remains very attached to traditions. Indeed, local clay has given rise to quality craftsmanship. The potters who formerly emigrated to Athens to find work, occupy an important place on the island. Workshops have multiplied everywhere, women in the country still use ceramic kitchen utensils to prepare meals. The island is distinguished by its villages, characterizedby an island architecture whose forms are of great purity and sobriety, as well as by the beauty of its landscapes and for its numerous monasteries. Very arid massifs and steep cliffs in the West contrast with the fertile valleys and the countryside covered with a multitude of century-old olive trees, almond trees, fig trees and terraced crops in the South-East. Its very indented coastline is home to numerous coves and, above all, beautiful fine sandy beaches. A dream.
Strong points: A multi-faceted island, Sifnos allows you to combine hiking, the pleasure of sightseeing, discovery of nature, the joys of the beach and ‘lazing around’ in a still traditional atmosphere.
