Located 7.5km from Fira, Pyrgos is a medieval village built on top of a hill planted with vineyards. The heart of the village is a maze of streets lined with traditional houses and neoclassical residences inherited from the Venetian occupation. There are also countless churches, most of them very beautiful.
Pyrgos is home to the best preserved fortresses (“kasteli”) on the island, built on the heights of the mountains in the 15th and 16th centuries to defend the local population against pirates.
Today it is one of the most famous villages on the island. Having become famous for its traditional Easter festival , which brings together a large part of the population who come here to celebrate Good Friday, this village has nevertheless managed to remain authentic.
There are many walks to do, one of which will allow you to discover the most beautiful panoramic view of the island from the Profitis Elias Monastery , located at the highest point of the island at 567m. The view over Santorini is fabulous, and it’s a wonderful vantage point to watch the sunset.
