A village straight out of the past: that’s what you feel when you walk through the medieval village of Megalochori, among its picturesque streets and famous churches.
This pretty village is located 9.5km from Fira next to Akrotiri, in the heart of a wine region. Peaceful and traditional, it also has the advantage of being located close to several beaches.
Megalochori, (a name meaning “large village”) was founded in the middle of the 17th century. Barely sixty years ago, one of the most powerful families on the island still ruled the village. Today, there are three of the largest wine farms on the island. A very famous sweet white wine is produced and exported to the whole world: “Visanto” , an old wine with flavors of spices, honey and lemon, produced only in Santorini using a traditional and unique manufacturing process. .
