A paradise for walkers and nature lovers , it is arid and windy, its relief is accentuated and dotted with small churches and beautiful villages with typically Cycladic architecture. The south-east coast is very steep with beautiful cliffs in red and orange tones while the north-east coast is indented by beautiful bays well protected from the winds. The south of the island is characterized by numerous peaks over 300m high.
It is divided into three centers bringing together several villages: Aegiali in the North with the villages of Langada , Tholaria , Potamos , Ormos Eghialis ), Chora and Katapola in the center and the ” Kato Meria ” in the South (the “lower countries”) .
During ancient times, the prosperity of Amorgos was due to the strategic position of its port of Katapola , whose harbor was known to be safe, and to numerous anchorages in other bays mainly on the northern coast. During prehistoric times, in the 3rd century BC, the island of Amorgos was one of the most important centers of Cycladic civilization.
According to mythology, the King of Crete, Minos, ruled over Amorgos , which is why many traces of Minoan civilization have been found on the island. There are two archaeological sites: Minoa and Arkesini .
Since the filming of Luc Besson’s film “Le Grand Bleu” in 1987, the island of Amorgos has become a popular destination for the French. Don’t forget to visit the cove of Liveros , where you will see the wreck where Enzo made his first dive, and which transformed Amorgos into the island of the “Big Blue”.
Strong points : A multifaceted island, still authentic and preserved, Amorgos charms visitors with its beautiful beaches with crystal clear waters and its numerous calm coves, its picturesque villages, its magnificent landscapes. It allows you to combine hiking, the pleasure of sightseeing, discovery of nature, the joys of the beach and ‘lazing around’ in a still traditional atmosphere.
